Google Business Profile

Set up and verify your Google Business Profile as a tour operator

Your Google Business Profile is the foundation of every direct booking you will ever get from Google. Before Things to Do, before ads, before schema — the profile has to exist, be verified, and be accurate.

Who this is for: New operators, guides without a storefront, and anyone whose profile was suspended or never verified.

1. Choose the right business model first

Google treats three situations differently, and picking the wrong one is the number one cause of suspensions for tour businesses.

  • Storefront: customers come to a fixed address (ticket office, museum, dive shop, winery). Show the full address.
  • Service-area business: you meet guests at a park, dock, or hotel lobby. Hide the address and set service areas instead.
  • Hybrid: you have an office guests can visit AND you travel to them. Show the address and add service areas.

2. Pick a primary category that matches demand

The primary category does more heavy lifting than any other field on the profile. It decides which searches you are eligible to appear in and which profile features unlock (booking links, menus, service lists).

Pick the most specific category that describes what you sell, not the broadest. "Boat Tour Agency" beats "Tour Operator". Add up to nine secondary categories for the other things you genuinely sell.

  • Primary: the one thing you would want to rank for if you could only rank for one.
  • Secondary: real service lines only — stuffing categories dilutes relevance.
  • Re-check categories seasonally; Google adds new ones regularly.

3. Verify — and get it right the first time

Most tour businesses now get video verification. You record one unbroken clip that proves three things: the location is real, you have equipment or signage that ties you to the business, and you have management access (keys, booking system on screen, branded gear).

Do not stop recording, do not edit, and do not upload a slideshow. A cut in the video is an automatic fail.

  • Film outside first (street sign, building, or dock), then walk to your equipment or office.
  • Show branded items: van decal, kayaks with your logo, uniform, printed permits.
  • Finish by showing your booking dashboard or business licence on a device.

4. Fix a rejected or suspended profile

Suspensions almost always trace back to an address mismatch, a keyword-stuffed business name, or a virtual office. Revert the offending field to the truth, then appeal — do not appeal first and edit later.

  • Business name must match real-world signage. No "| Best Kayak Tours Miami".
  • Never use a co-working or mailbox address as a storefront.
  • One profile per real location. Duplicate listings get both removed.

Quick checklist

  • Business model chosen (storefront vs service area) and set correctly
  • Primary category is the most specific accurate option
  • Business name matches real signage exactly
  • Verification completed (video recorded in one take)
  • Hours, phone, and website filled in and correct

Frequently asked questions

How long does Google Business Profile verification take for a tour company?

Video verification is usually reviewed within five business days. Postcard verification can take two weeks or more, which is why video is the better option for seasonal operators.

Can I run a Google Business Profile without a physical address?

Yes. Set yourself up as a service-area business, hide the address, and define the areas where you actually operate. You still need to prove the business is real during verification.
